• Here are some tips on how to use an insect net: Sweep the net through tall grass or wildflowers using short, quick strokes. Many insects will end up in the net, even though only a few were visible beforehand. Sometimes it is even possible to net an insect in flight. Once you have captured an insect, turn the handle of the net to close the opening. This prevents insects from escaping before you've had a chance to observe them. Look through the mesh to see what you have caught, or gently transfer the insects to a container for further study. Most insects, even stinging ones, can be handled safely if you are careful.
