Surprise your kids and go on a Night Hike!
Hiking at night with children is an enchanting adventure that offers a unique way to bond with nature and family. The experience transforms a simple walk into a magical journey, where every step is filled with wonder and excitement.
Children love going for walks at night. Familiar places look very different at night, and sound different, too! Kids get to witness a side of nature that's usually hidden during their waking hours.
What You Will Need:
- Flashlights (one for each person, if possible)
- Safe area to hike in
What You Do:
- Let your child carry a flashlight to look around with, while you carry a flashlight to light the path.
- Make sure to time the walk for the ability of your children, and don't go too far from home.
Variations:
- It's fun to stop and turn off the flashlights every once in a while. Listen to the night sounds and look up at the moon and stars.
- Night hikes provide numerous learning opportunities. Kids can learn about nocturnal animals, the phases of the moon, and the constellations in the night sky. Bring along a star chart or a mobile app to help identify different stars and constellations. Discuss the adaptations of animals that come out at night, such as owls, bats, and fireflies. This hands-on learning experience can ignite a lifelong interest in science and nature.
- Navigating trails in the dark helps kids build confidence and improve their problem-solving skills. Using flashlights (or headlamps) they learn to rely on their senses other than sight. This can be a great way to teach them about safety and awareness in the outdoors.
- Hiking at night fosters a sense of togetherness. The quiet and calm of the nighttime environment encourage meaningful conversations and moments of silence shared under the stars. Without the usual daytime distractions, families can connect more deeply and create lasting memories. The shared adventure of exploring the unknown can strengthen family bonds and create stories to be retold for years to come.
Safety:
- Dress for the weather. Temperatures at night can drop, so dress in layers to stay warm.
- Make sure everyone has a reliable flashlight or headlamp and pack extra batteries.
- Choose a familiar trail to avoid getting lost, and always let someone know your plans.
- Bring along water and snacks.
- Make sure to check the weather forecast before venturing out at night.
Grab your flashlights and venture into the night. There's a whole new world waiting to be discovered!
